After Cedar County was organized by the Nebraska territorial legislature in 1857, two towns close to the Missouri river served in turn as county seat. Centrally located Hartington, founded in 1883 as a stop on the new railroad, became the third county in 1885. A bond issue for a new courthouse was passed and construction began in 1891 with completion the following year.
J.C.Stitt was the architect of this beautiful simplified Romanesque building constructed of locally produced brick and trimmed with white stone. Contractor Henry Stuckenhoff of Hartington constructed a number of other early buildings in the area.
