Water pumping windmills, once a common feature on farms throughout the United States, are now rarely seen. But hundreds, probably thousands, are still at work on the ranches in the Nebraska Sandhills in the north central part of the state.
The Sandhills are a unique physio graphic feature covering approximately 19,600 square miles, about one fourth of Nebraska. This vast area of grass covered sand dunes is cattle producing country. The water table is high and small lakes and ponds are found in low areas.
While driving through the Sandhills windmills like this one can be seen everywhere. They are usually simple, relatively low structures which pump water into low circular metal tanks. This particular windmill is located along Rt.2 a few miles west of Hyannis, Nebraska.
