The Solano County Municipal Utility District (SMUD) in California first installed wind generation in 1994. The windmills are located in an area of southern Solano County along the Sacramento Delta that receives intense wind from the heating and cooling differential between the inland valley and the coast. The landscape in the area is typified by rolling grassy hillsides and is generally used for grazing, a land use that is quite compatible with windmils. SMUD generates a sizeable percentage of power from these windmills--up to 39 megawatts of power according to the SMUD estimates.
For more information, see
the SMUD web page.
The coordinates for the photo and windmill are for the end of Talbert Lane near the tiny riverfront town of Collinsville.
