Corps of Discovery II – Fort Lincoln, ND, is a twelve-inch Lewis and Clark commemorative disk located in Fort Abraham Lincoln State Historical Park, south of Mandan, Morton County, ND. It is in the NGS database at PID = DH4425: (
visit link) . The disk is mounted in the top of a three-foot diameter concrete monument that projects about 16 inches, and is at the center of a round, stone patio in a picnic area. The disk is about 305 feet south-southeast of the southwest corner of the stone main museum center building, about 125 feet north of the intersection of the centerlines of the main park road and the paved entrance driveway to the museum parking lot, about 72 feet northwest of the centerline of the paved driveway, and about 30 feet northwest of the centerline of a paved bicycle path on the northwest side of the driveway. The North Dakota Society of Professional land Surveyors monumented the disk on August 20, 2004. It was dedicated during the “Circle of Cultures, Time of Renewal and Exchange” national signature event on October 23, 2004, and visited by this correspondent on July 14, 2005. The disk does not have any other identifying stamping other than the standard design elements of the commemorative series of disks: CORPS OF DISCOVERY II – 200 YEARS TO THE FUTURE – PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP. To reach from Interstate 94 in Mandan, ND, take Exit 155 and follow signs southwest to downtown Mandan. Go southwest on Main Street for about 1.0 miles to the intersection with 6th Ave East/Route 1806. Go southerly on Route 1806 for about six miles to the park entrance, just south of the Veteran's Cemetery. Go north on the park road for about 0.4 miles to the entrance gate and fee booth, continue north for another 0.5 miles to the museum center parking lot on the right. Enter the lot and park at the most southwest spot available. Walk southwest back towards the park road to the picnic area and the disk. Note: the state historical park is a fee area.
