Built in 1953, this is the third McDonald's restaurant established under the leadership of Ray Kroc. Today it is the world's oldest McDonald's still in operation. It still has the original golden arches, a neon sign with Speedee McDonald (forerunner to Ronald), the red and white tile exterior, and a vintage interior with the 1970's style menu.
Located just 1 mile from the now-closed North American Rockwell plant where the Apollo spacecraft was built, some of its 1960s & 70s patrons likely included astronauts who walked on the Moon.
It was damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake and nearly torn down, but the community demanded it remain open due to its historic nature. It was repaired, made eligible for the National Register of Historic Places, and a small museum and gift shop was placed on the grounds. Artifacts include vintage cups, cash registers, food wrappers, 1st menu, toys, hats, and other items donated by individuals and the McDonald's Corporation.
