Hooker County, population 783 in the 2000 census, is one eleven Nebraska counties with less than a thousand residents. The county was organized in 1889, later than most Nebraska Counties. Over half the population of the county, 490 people reside in Mullen the county seat.
The story and a half brick courthouse was built in 1912. It stands atop a slope in the center of town. A small area on one side, which has playground equipment and a public rest room, functions as a park. My husband and a graduate student camped overnight there once, literally on the courthouse lawn.
The courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic places
in 1990.
