As of 1920, all covered bridges in Rhode Island had been removed or taken to a non-traffic location. In 1992 the Swamp Meadow Covered Bridge was dedicated as the first covered bridge in Rhode Island. In September 1993, that bridge was burned down by three local youths. Community members were determined to see the bridge rise again. In November 1994 this Swamp Meadow Covered Bridge was rededicated and stands to this day.
Based on an 1820 design, this bridge remains the only covered bridge in Rhode Island to be open to vehicle traffic and one of only three in the state.
