Description: Vaughan's brother, Jimmie Vaughan, gave him his first guitar lessons. Vaughan was later quoted in Guitar Player as saying that his brother was one of the biggest influences on his playing. Vaughan played entirely by ear and never learned how to read sheet music. By the time he was thirteen years old he was playing in clubs where he met many of his blues idols. A few years later he dropped out of high school and moved to Austin to pursue music.
His first break occurred when Keith Richards and Mick Jagger saw him playing at a club and invited them to play at a private party in the early 1980s. From then on he was able to meet the influential people who allowed him to achieve further recognition and to attain his fame and notoriety. His first album was released in 1983, and in 1985 another album went gold. Over the next few years Vaughan continued to perform but struggled with drug and alcohol addictions which he eventually beat.
