1933 - 1958
The Mountain View Howell Co., Missouri City Jail also known as "THE WHAT?"
If the original Mountain View city jail had not been moved in 1933, it would have been standing in the middle of Highway 17; therefore, local builder "Red" Friend undertook to move it out of the path of the highway construction. To the consternation of the fathers, however, it fell apart in the moving. The building was replaced, first built to the West of the highway then moved to its present site facing the Frisco Railroad tracks.
Old timers say that upon spying it, Frisco passengers would exclaim, "What's that?"
From that time on, the tiny jail has been known as "THE WHAT?"
The last record of its use was December, 1958.
The land around the jail is used by the Lady's Garden Club called "WHAT PARK".
