Screen backdrops don’t get much more dramatic than Arches National Park in Utah, USA.
The third of the Indiana Jones trilogy was filmed all over the place, including Moab, Utah. It’s Seven Mile Canyon, in the spectacular Arches National Park, where young Indy (River Phoenix) spends the movie’s prologue. Amazingly, the park contains over 2,000 natural sandstone arches, as well as many other unusual rock formations. Arches is located in a "high desert," , which means that the climate is one of very hot summers and cold winters temperatures may vary wildly in a single day.
The film starts in 1912 with Indy as a Boy Scout in a failed attempt to retrieve the Cross of Coronado from treasure hunters. After stealing the Cross from Fedora and escaping across the countryside on horseback and circus train, Indy returns home, only to have the local sheriff reclaim the Cross for Fedora and his client, Panama Hat. The small adventure inspires his whip, fear of snakes, fedora (and style of dress), and even the scar on his chin
River Phoenix shot his scenes in September, three weeks after main filming wrapped.
Arches is one big outdoor adventure playground, perfect for hiking, biking, climbing, horse-riding and other active pursuits. As the name hints, the area is famed for its remarkable rock formations. Some of the natural sandstone bridges that have formed here over measure up to almost 300 feet wide.
The park is also great for desert wildlife-spotting; keep your eyes peeled for various types of rattlesnake, fox, lizard and even the odd mountain lion.
