Hog's Back Falls in the south end of Ottawa ON is located along the Rideau River. At the time of construction of the Rideau Canal in 1827 a dam was built here to raise the water of the Rideau above the rapids about a mile to the south. This would also create an entry point to the 5 mile Rideau Canal which bypasses the river and feeds into the Ottawa River in downtown Ottawa. The water below the dam flows over and around a rock formation which is similar in appearance to the back of a hog, hence the name.
