Aleme Chattelle was hanged at this jail in May of 1895, for the mutilation and murder of 13 year old Jessie Keith. When apprehended, he was found to be carrying a black valise containing some of the victim's clothing, and also to be wearing stolen women's underwear. Even without his eventual confession, his fate was pretty much sealed, even though some of the witnesses against him were not sure of his identity as the person they saw in the area, and the fact that his story not only changed over time, but parts of it did not match the facts that the "investigation" turned up. It is his ghost that is said to occaisionally appear, still gripping the valise he was carrying when arrested, as he glares into the windows at whoever is unfortunate enough to see him.
