Kumen Jones grew up in Cedar City, Utah; rode horses for the Pony Express as a young man and came with the settlers sent by Brigham Young to settle the Southeast corner of the territory. They took a route now known as The Hole in the Rock, now a narrow side canyon of Lake Powell. This is an incredible story of courage and ingenuity. Kumen, 26, was asked by Brother Perkins an older man, but not as experienced handling a wagon and team, to drive the first wagon down through the Hole in the Rock. They needed to know if a wagon would make it. Probably the most heroic tale from this pioneer epic were the Smith family, the last wagon through the crack. This family was left on the ridge and all the help had moved on leaving the crack washed free of many rocks used to slow the wagons. The wife and horse were all that was left to slow the wagon, both receiving serious injuries in the descent.
