In 1609, Samuel de Champlain first set foot in Vermont and camped at this site.
In 1666, the French built a fort and chapel, dedicated to St. Anne; it was the first European settlement and Catholic Mass was celebrated for the first time in what is now Vermont.
The Diocese of Burlington purchased the land in the late 1800s and began construction of a shrine. Today, it remains a popular pligrimage destination to attend outdoor Mass in summer.
The Stations of the Cross encircle a grassy lakeshore area of about a half-acre, with a central crucifix.
