The "Old Pen," as it is refered to, is located in the middle of Rawlins, Wyoming. An easy to take tour of the prison will provide visitors all the erieness that the prison has to offer. While we, on our tour did not encounter any ghosts, our guide was much abligiged to let us know of all the spirits he personally had encountered.
The "old Pen" was completed in 1901. 14 executions were conducted through the life of the prison; nine by hanging and five by use of the the gas chamber. This undoubtably adds to the haunted atmosphere.
Prison life was miserable for the inmates. Heating was very poor at best. Hot water was not added until 1978. An area called the Dungeon, was added in 1906 for the worst discipline cases, and was used until the 1960's when two prisonners were found frozen to death.
