The museum itself, opened in 1936, exhibits the lifestyle and hardships the pioneers endured while heading westward on the Oregon Trail. The Overland Trail stage route was a branch of the Oregon Trail that followed the south bank of the South Platte River through northeastern Colorado. It is believed that this route may have been the heaviest traveled road in America from 1862 to 1868.

The yard in front of the museum's building also has exhibits of transportation and farming technology used by the pioneers during their travels and settlement of the west. The yard also is the site of an historical marker reading:

"3.8 miles north
Along Country Road ia the Site of
Valley Station
Built in 1859 as a stagecoach
Station of the Leavenworth
and Pike's Peak Express
Station on the Overland Trail
to California, 1862-67.
Indian War Outpost, 1864-65.
Once defended by a breastwork
of sacks and shelled corn."

There is also a "village" behind the museum with several period buildings, shops and farm machinery.
