How does a collage get a mascot? Well one story goes back to the 1930's when a reporter announced that the basketball players of the then Youngstown Collage were standing around like a bunch of penguins. The name stuck, and today's Youngstown State University proudly proclaim they are, “The Home of the Penguins!”
There have been many penguins as mascots on campus including three live penguins. The first Penguin was called Pete. He died in a sad accident where he drowned under the ice of a local lake trying to catch a fish. The last live penguin was in the late 70's, and today the mascot is a student in a Penguin suit.
The penguin I chose for my picture stands tall over the new main entrance off Wick Avenue. It is one of 23 six foot penguins that were part of Penguins Parade. This penguin was painted by Scott Rolff a graduate of Youngstown State University. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BFA in Painting. His penguin is called, Foreshadows Past.
His abstract for his statue is as follows:
“Many Works of literature allude to future event through a literary device called 'foreshadowing.' but what happens when our foreshadows come from the past? My design depicts the prosperity and strength of our past steel industry through the dark rusty colors of the pedestal—evolving into the bright silvery chrome colors of the penguin, simultaneously representing our glorious past and our bright future.”
