Kennebec is located in central South Dakota, in Lyman County. It is on I-90 and County Highway 273 about 35 miles from the Missouri River to the east.
The town was incorporated on September 8, 1909 and its population is made up of German, Irish, Swedish, Norwegian, and French ancestries.
As of the 2000 census, there were 286 people living in Kennebec.
Two notable citizens came from Kennebec: Merril Q. Sharpe was the 17th Governor of South Dakkota, and James Abdnor was a US Congressman and Administrator of the Small Business Administration from 1987-1989.
