This small park is located on Winton's main street — Great North Road, aka State Highway 6. Often missed by passing motorists rushing from Queenstown to Invercargill, it is a nice gem of an urban park in a small country town.
The Anzac Oval provides a respite for people driving a couple picnic tables, lush green foliage, a newly created band rotunda, and features the war memorial gates. It is also the starting location of the Winton Heritage Trail, a route that takes travellers throughout Winton to historic houses and places of interest. The final stop is the grave on Minnie Dean, the only woman to have been hung in New Zealand.
Being three metres below street level it is easy to forget that you are in the largest town in Central Southland. A rather bustling place, to say the least.
