This original Capitol building at this location was constructed in 1705 and was the first of its kind in America. To prevent fires, the original building didn't include fireplaces, but they were installed later to keep the interior dry. Subsequently, a fire destroyed the building in 1747. The Capitol was rebuilt, but after government activities were relocated to Richmond in 1780, the building began to decay and was stripped for materials. Restoration was started in the early 1900's when Colonial Williamsburg was established, and the current Capitol adheres closely to the 1705 building.
