Lane Stadium is named for Edward Lane who was a member of the Board of Visitors and was instrumental in raising over 3-million dollars in construction costs. Construction on the stadium began in 1964 and opened in 1965 when Virginia Tech defeated William and Mary by a score of 9-7. When the original stadium opened it seated 35,500 and featured grandstands on both sides of the field and bleacher in the end zone. The stadium was next renovated in the early 1980’s when its capacity was increased to 52,500 and was fast becoming an intimidating place for visitors to play. Over the next several years several more addition were made that increased its capacity to 66,000. Hokie Fans are some of the most loyal and dedicated in the nation and Lane Stadium is constantly ranked as one of the best home field advantages in all of college football.
