Official Description: Two identical north and south facades. The central entry is flanked by fluted columns, which appear to support a barrel-vaulted arch. Above each storefront window is a panel with a heavy, sagging garland around an oval cartouche, symmetrically strung between two lion heads carved in high relief. A similar garland and cartouche motif appears over the entrance archway. Testing on the cornice is a limestone tablet. Atop the tablet is a single carved basket of fruit, overflowing with garlands which spill out of the basket and down the facade.
Inscription:
(Carved in a tablet on each of the facades:) TERMINAL ARCADE unsigned
The Terminal Arcade was constructed as an interurban station for the Eastern Traction Company connecting Terre Haute and Indianapolis. It closed in January 1940 when the tracks were shut down due the age of automobiles. From 1949 until 1972, it was Terre Haute's bus station.
The building is of Beaux-Arts architecture design which features a flat roof, arched and pedimented entrance, symmetry, and sculpture (such as bas-relief panels). It is made of terra cotta, brick, limestone, and granite. Various building designs include lions, garlands, and fruits.
While the building's fate has been questioned over the years (to make space for "modern" facilities), since 1995 it has been the Terminal Sports & Spirits bar.
