The New Kent Courthouse was built in 1990 and replaced the old 1909 structure, which is still used for various county services. A significant renovation of the new courthouse was completed in 2009. A second floor was added to relieve congestion on the first level. This addition was anticipated in the original 1990 design and was completed without interrupting proceedings. The second level includes a courtroom for Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court cases and space for the commonwealth's attorney's office. The renovation also included security upgrades and improvements to the Office of the Sheriff.
