Scienceworks is a hands-on science museum targeted towards children, and run by Museum Victoria. Scienceworks has a variety of long & short-term exhibits, with an emphasis on interaction and learning play.
The museum in located on the site of the Historic Spotswood Pumping Station (
visit link) which houses some of the exhibits and original steam driven equipment.
The Museum also incorporates the Melbourne Planetarium (
visit link) and Lightning Room, which houses a large Tesla Coil.

Live science shows are held in the outdoor amphitheatre several times a day, and children's activities, such as kite building are run during school holidays (free with price of admission).
My eleven year old son describes Scienceworks as awesomely awesome! and my five year old daughter, probably enjoyed it more!
