Joseph Henry was an Albany-born scientist who attended school at the nearby Albany Academy. He later became a professor at the Academy, and it was during this time that he developed the principles of electromagnetics that would eventually lead to the creation of the DC motor.
The Albany Academy, located just a few steps from this marker (the brown building that can be seen in the background), currently serves as the home to Albany's Department of Education - a statue of Joseph Henry is located in front of the building.
The text of the marker reads:
"Birthplace of Modern Electricity
Here discovering magnetic induction, Joseph Henry pioneered the telegraph and electric motor, 1829-31."
