Hull Gate lies on the path between the main quadrangle of the University of Chicago and the Joseph Regenstein Library. The beautiful Gothic-style gate and passage is almost always open to people, but almost never open to vehicles. One exception to this is the movie When Harry Met Sally: in the first scene, as the pair drives off the University of Chicago campus, they drive through Hull Gate.
A common statement about Hull Gate regards the gargoyles atop it. These are often stated to represent the journey of the undergraduate. The ones at the bottom are said to represent the stoic admissions officers. As you go up the slope, they represent the 1st years, 2nd years, and 3rd years, until you get to the top, where the 4th year looks triumphant over the campus.
