Tolstoy is located in northeast Potter County, South Dakota. It has a population of 50 as of July 2008. This reflects a 22% decrease in population from the 2000 census.

German, English, Russian, Ukrainian, Dutch, and Irish peoples settled the area and the town was incorporated in 1907.

The town was founded in 1907 as a station stop on a branch line of the Minneapolis and St. Louis Railway build that year between Conde and LeBeau, South Dakota. Rail service to Tolstoy ended in 1940.

The community was named after Count Leo Tolstoy, the Russian novelist
