This carved statue is one of eight statues along a sculpture trail in Broxbourne Woods. The eight wooden pieces have themes that celebrate the ancient nature of the surrounding woodland.

The centurian, with his shield and sword, is intended to highlight the age of the surrounding woodland.

The trail was created in 2005 as a Woodland Trust project. The commission was placed with local artist Dan Cordell and was executed in oak.
