The IKEA Richmond location first opened in 1976 at the south end of the recently completed Knight Street Bridge. Back then it was most farmland that surrounded it. However, today there many of IKEA knock-off stores in the area as well as several other big box stores such as Home Depot.

As the population of Greater Vancouver grew, so did the traffic congestion. In response IKEA opened another outlet in the Lower Mainland sited in Coquitlam.
