This life-sized memorial is adjacent to the Ouray Visitors Center and Hot Springs Pool. It represents a miner changing the bit on his drill. Before pneumatic drills, this tedious labor was done by had - called a double-jack team. One miner would hold the drill bit while another pounded with an 8-pound sledge. Longer and narrower bits were used until the hole was deep enough for the blasting powder.

The memorial is surrounded on the inside by plaques honoring San Juan Miners. On the top of the memorial are representative ore samples from the area. On the rear of the concrete half-circle is a mural of the mines, rivers and roads of the San Juan's in the area of Ouray.
Sector of the workforce: Mining

Created or Donated by which group: Ouray Highraders, Inc.
