The Kimball's Store was built in 1915. The building was built for Irving Kimball, who had been an early merchant and trader in Alaska back to the 1890s prior to establishing his business in Anchorage. The store opened in November 1915 and sold general merchandise. The building was one of the few two story building built at that time in Anchorage as most were single story false buildings. The store was one of the few located on 5th Avenue as most were located on 4th. Mr. Kimball operated his business until his death in 1921. The family continued operations of the business after his death. In 1935 the sale of groceries was discontinued and the business concentrated on the sale of hardware and dry goods. With the death the Mrs. Kimball in 1958, the building was divided into two commercial establishments. The east half remained in the dry goods business and the west half became a paint company. In 1963, the west half was leased to the Kobuk Coffee Company. Now both storefronts are used by Kobuk Coffee Company however they have expanded to gifts along with being a coffee shop.
