A caboose provided the train crew with shelter at the rear of the train. From here, the crew could leave the train for switching or to protect the rear of the train when it was stopped. The crew could also inspect the train for problems from this position on the train.
The caboose doubled as an "office" for the conductor, as he could keep his records at a table or desk in the caboose. When longer trips were necessary, the caboose provided minimal living quarters.
The elevated portion of the caboose is called the "cupola" which is actually a window projection up through the roof of the caboose. This enables the crew to inspect the train from the back, but it gives them the ablility to see past the top of the taller cars that began to appear after World War II.
Current Use: It is part of a static display at the Komoka Train Museum.
Type Of Caboose: Extended Vision
