The monument, marker, and flaank markers were all made of zinc, or "white bronze". Unfortunately, the material was not as durable as the true bronze of most other metal monuments on the battlefield. At one point the top of the monument had to be removed for safety reasons, but it has since been restored. At the top is a statue of Colonel Samuel Sprigg Carroll. He is standing tall, mustache, hat, musket clenched in hands with business end facing up, looking outward, right proper foot forward, cape slung over left proper shoulder.
The 4th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (or 4th OVI) was an infantry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. It served in the Eastern Theater in a number of campaigns and battles, but perhaps is most noted for its actions in helping secure Cemetery Hill during the Battle of Gettysburg.
