Two plaques are placed in the pavement near the sculptures. The plaque by the male sculpture reads:
RIVER RUNNER
This statue was presented to the City of Jacksonville,
Florida, by the Jacksonville Track Club on March 2, 2002,
to commemorate the 25th running of the Gate River Run,
a 15 kilometer foot race.
The inaugural River Run started at this location on
April 1, 1978. This runner symbolizes the partnership
between the City of Jacksonville and the Jacksonville
Track Club's Gate River Run, the largest participatory
sporting event in the city.

The plaque by the female sculpture reads:
RIVER RUNNER
The original River Runner is joined by a female companion,
representing the continued growth and participation of
women as a force in the national and local running scene.
This statue also celebrates the contributions made by
women to the success of Jacksonville's River Run.
Dedicated this day, February 28, 2011, to the City of
Jacksonville, Florida, by JTC Running (Formerly Jacksonville
Track Club.)
