This old 3,500-seat amphitheater is located in Papago Park, Phoenix, AZ. It was constructed in 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The amphitheater was formerly host to Easter sunrise services, concerts, and community events, but has been out of use for roughly 50 years due to the construction of McDowell Road just to the north of it. The lower stage area was formerly larger than at present and there was a parking area just below Barnes Butte. Currently the only close-by parking available is off McDowell Road and will accommodate only five or six cars. The amphitheater was partially restored in 2010 as the subject of an Eagle Scout Project; sediment that had washed down into the amphitheater from the nearby hillsides was removed, shoddy masonry repairs were improved, and benches that had begun slipping downhill were restored.
