Grand Isle County was not formed until 1803; this building was constructed in 1824, prior to which court proceedings were held in Jed P. Ladd's hotel. In early times, the courtroom also served as a venue for church services. The building is unique in Vermont in that it is constructed of native marble quarried right in the county.

As with most other counties, the sheriff's office is part of the courthouse complex (court and sheriff being essentially the only manifestations of county government in Vermont).
