St. George's Church - Georgetown, Penang
St George's Anglican church was completed in 1818 and is the oldest Anglican church in Southeast Asia. It was designed by Captian Robert Smith, a military engineer. Smith also painted oils of early Penang, these can be seen in the Penang State Museum.
The church was built with convict labour during Colonal John Bannerman's term as governor of Penang. Bannerman's daughter, Janet, married W. Phillips in the first marrriage to be celebrated in the church.
When first built the church had a flat roof, the current pitched roof was added in 1864.
The Greek style temple in front of the church is dedicated to Francis Light, the British founder of Georgetown.
On 6 July 2007, the church was declared one the 50 National Treasures of Malaysia by the Malaysian government.
