Foyle’s War was a drama series about a police superintendent during World War 2. The drama starred Michael Kitchen as Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle, Honeysuckle Weeks as his driver Samantha Stewart, and Anthony Howell as Sergeant Paul Milner.

In the episode The French Drop an SOE agent is found dead in Hastings. The agent has apparently committed suicide using a grenade, but Foyle is not convinced. The body is totally disfigured making identification difficult. The apparent motive for the suicide is alleged to be girlfriend related. Foyle interviews the girlfriend and his landlady, both of which act suspiciously. Foyle eventually decides to visit the SOE station at Levenham and eventually works out that the exploded body is not the SOE agent, but a body of a local villager exhumed from the local churchyard. The real SOE agent had been killed in France in a minefield. SOE tried to cover up the agent’s death, due to outdated SOE intelligence about minefields, by the apparent suicide.

Although Foyle’s War is supposed to be set in and around Hastings, the village of Levenham used in the filming was located at King’s Walden (church), Standon (phone box spy drop off point) and Preston (Samantha quizzing local about stranger in village), all in Hertfordshire. At the present location Sam has gone into the village of Levenham to quiz the locals about a mysterious stranger that Sam suspects might be a spy.
