The history of the Torrey Pines Gliderport and motorless flight goes back to 1928. Many famous pilots, including Charles Lindberg, have flown here. Technology has changed over the years and the port is now used for parasailing and hang gliding instead of launching and landing craft with rigid wings. The gliderport still sports its FAA designation of CA84.
But you don't have to get your feet off the ground to enjoy activities at the Gliderport. The view of the ocean off La Jolla is great and many sunsets are truly spectacular view from here. If you're lucky, and maybe with an assist from some good binoculars, you can spot migrating grey whales during the season of December through March.
And if you want to get a good tan with no clothing lines, you can pop on down to Black's Beach just below the Gliderport (clothing optional). Just don't plan on using your binoculars to try to get a view of the beach from above. The bluff is steep and the edges very unstable; you could wind up amidst a bunch of nudists while sporting your clothes plus assorted bruises, lacerations, and broken bones.
