"Built in 1935, the Herried House is one of the farm houses associated with
the Alaska Rural Rehabilitation Corporation project in the Matanuska
Valley. Originally, the house was part of a colony farm. It is
significant because it has been minimally altered since its construction
and is an excellent example of the design and fabrication of a colony farm
house. Pre-cut logs, marked and drilled, ready to be assembled at a
building site, were used to build the house. Of interest, the numbers on
the logs of the house are still visible.
The original owners, Leonard and Ella Herried, left the colony with their
two children on February 4, 1938. Earl Hecker, who joined the colony in
June 1938, was the subsequent owner of the property during the period of
significance." - National Register Nomination Form
