The memorial consists of a white square column. WW1 casualties are shown and also there are names of miners who served during the war. Heading on column reads-
1914 - 1919
FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR.
This memorial was moved to this site in 1985 from Pit Lane when the colliery closed.
On the winding wheel are two panels with the following inscription-
DEDICATED TO THOSE MEN AND WOMEN OF THIS PARISH WHO SERVED IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1946
and
CORTONWOOD COLLIERY 1873-1985
