The pictorial sign at Putaruru, population around 4000, depicts the clear spring waters at the internationally acclaimed Blue Spring grotto on the Te Waihou River near the town.

The blue Koru represents new life and is the Koru shape of the water feature in the Water Park in central Putaruru.

The shape of the whole sign is greatly significant, it is a Saw blade shape because of the long association of Putaruru and the Timber Industry.

Putaruru is known as Timber town. The area has had a connection with the industry that dates back to the turn of the century.
In 1903, the bush tramline was built to haul logs from Mokai to Putaruru and the establishment of the Taupo Totara Timber Company meant an influx of population and the town of Putaruru developed.
There is now a Timber Museum built on the site of the old Tuck and Watkins mill and retains much of the equipment, machinery that was used.
