Theophile Bruguier, was the first white settler in the Sioux City area arriving here in 1836. He had been educated as a lawyer in Canada but headed to St. Louis to work for the American Fur Company after the death of his fiancée. His work as a fur-trader and interpreter took him to Dakota Territory where he learned the Sioux language and traded with Chief War Eagle’s people. Bruguier later married two of the chief’s daughters and built this cabin as part of his fur trading post. It was originally located at the mouth of the Big Sioux River but was moved in 1934 to its present location in Riverside Park. The cabin was restored by the Girls of ’68, a group which promotes and preserves Sioux City history; the group is the official caretaker of the cabin and uses it seasonally for their meetings.
