Jackson is often erroneously referred to as "Jackson Hole". The way to remember the difference is Jackson
Hole is the "whole" valley. Jackson is also home to the National Elk Reserve, located at the northern edge of town and limiting its growth in that direction. The older section of town, devoted to the tourist trade, preserves the early western flavor of the town. One of Jackson's most memorable features are the four arches constructed of shed elk antlers that are located at the four corners of the town square.
As you leave Jackson traveling south, the rear of their "Welcome to Jackson" sign thanks you for watching out for the wildlife (and they're referring to the four-legged kind!) which may be roaming the streets of town.
