Located in the eastern part of South Dakota, Howard is the county seat of Miner County. Howard is on SD Highway 34 about 20 miles west of Madison, SD.
The population of Howard was 885 in July 2009, showing a 17% decrease in the population from the 2000 census.
The area was settled by German, Norwegian, Irish, and Dutch immigrants and the town was incorporated on March 14, 1885.
The funeral home was started by Herb and Josie Willoughby in 1943. It has been in the family since then and today is operated by Terry Lee, son-in-law to one of the grandaughters of Herb and Josie.
