The North Bay area was a trading point for First Nations people long before the Europeans arrived, so Samuel Champlain sent Jean Nicolet to live with the Nipissing First Nation to learn about trade, trade routes and develop trading ties. Nicolet became the first European in the area. This plaque is in Lee Park, near the city's waterfront and only a few kilometres from where the Lavase River meets Lake Nipissing, the area's first European settlement and a native trading point for centuries before that.
