A short hike up Murray Hill provides an incredible view of the Missouri River Valley below and the surrounding Loess Hills. An information sign tells the geology and significance of this unique topography.
Following the Missouri River Valley, the wind-blown silt deposits claim to be 200’ deep in some areas. These deposits date back to the Illinoian and Wisconsinian glacial periods and are found only in western Iowa and in China, a state treasure to be sure. Previously designated as a state scenic byway, the Loess Hills area was chosen to be a National Scenic Byway in 2000 especially because of its scenery, history, landscape, and recreational characteristics. This area also parallels much of the Lewis and Clark expedition route. This unique land formation is about 15 miles wide and runs from Sioux City, IA to St. Joseph, Missouri.
