One of the most well known and enduring legends of Canada; that of the Black Donnellys. The history leading up to the murders is too long to be covered on this website but is available on any number of other websites. Of importance to the haunting is that 5 members of the Donnelly family were brutally murdered by a mob on the night of February 4, 1880. There names were James Donnelly (patriarch of the family), Johannah Donnelly (wife of James and Mother of all their children), John Donnelly (their first child born in Canada), Thomas Donnelly (the youngest son) and Bridget Donnelly (James neice from Ireland). After the murders the house was set on fire to cover the crime.
There are a few stories about horses related to this haunting.
- That horses will not go on Roman Line on the night of February 3-4.
- That horses will not pass the Donnelly homestead at all.
- That horses will pitch a fit if brought on the property - this story has been substantiated by former owners of the property.
Apparitions of all of the family members have been seen in the house that is now on the property as well as staring out of the windows. A sensation of being watched is reportedly frequently in the barn as well as the same feeling from the windows in the house reported by winesses outside the house (including members of our team). Objects move on their own in the house as well as disappear and reappear in other places. Phantom footsteps have been reported in the barn as well as a feeling of pressure on witnesses' chests and screams heard inside people's heads. Other activity reported: light anomalies, general feeling of being watched, and shadow figures.
