For those who remember Shakey's in its hey day in the 60's, there was nothing like the ragtime music, black and white cartoons, peanuts with shells on the floor, waiters with their red and white stripes and straw hats. Add a pepperoni pizza and a pitcher of root beer, and it was a night out!
After the original partners sold their respective shares of the company, it changed hands several times and most outlets in the United States were closed. Now there are actually more Shakey's franchises in the Philippines than anywhere else. But, not to fear, because a resurgence back into the U.S., beginning in California where it all started, is underway.
Taytay is an urban area west of Metro Manila, but there is really no break in the city sprawl, so it feels like one huge megapolis. This Shakeys is right on the main road near a five-way intersection, clogged with jeepneys, tricycles and buses. Somehow, it all works. The road is undergoing improvements to ease the traffic congestion at this location.
