The old Berea Christian Church in Spotsylvania Courthouse, VA is now the home of the Spotsylvania County Museum. The museum is operated by the Spotsylvania Historical Association and contains artifacts and memorabilia from colonial times to the Civil War era. Most of the items have been donated or loaned by local residents. Period furniture pieces double as display cases. Civil War items include a battlefield stretcher with blood stains and flags of the various northern and southern regiments. A diorama, constructed as an Eagle Scout project, shows the battles of Wilderness and Spotsylvania Court House. Berea Christian Church was built in 1856 by Samuel Alsop, one of the foremost builders in Spotsylvania County of the time, and is a good example of the Gothic Revival period architecture. The building has remained well-preserved and even survived being caught in the crossfire during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House in 1864. A cannon ball came through the front door and was later found lodged in a wall. The old colonial church cemetery is still in the back. References: - [Link no longer available]
